Q: What experiences put you on your spiritual path?
A: I grew up feeling depressed, with an absent father and dependent mother. I felt empty as I fed my mother’s needs and sacrificed my own. Depression led me to search for theological and philosophical answers that would give life meaning. When I joined the Catholic lay movement, Communion and Liberation, I found the answers I was seeking. Father Luigi Giussani, the movement’s founder, encouraged me to follow my heart. Now I know that it is through our desires and humanity that we find God—not in spite of them.
Q: If you had thirty seconds with someone in an elevator, what three things would you tell the person to do to be joyful, peaceful, and whole?
A: Open your heart, accept your desires, and embrace reality and yourself as they are right now. Being fully present and living here and now brings great joy and peace.
